Hyejung Won, PhD
ASD Researchers at UNC
Assistant Professor, Department of Genetics
Hyejung Won, PhD, is an assistant professor in the Department of Genetics and the UNC Neuroscience Center. Dr. Won completed her PhD in Dr. Eunjoon Kim’s lab at KAIST, where she investigated the underlying mechanism of neurodevelopmental disorders using genetically modified mouse models. She did her postdoctoral studies at UCLA, where she performed genome-wide analyses of chromosome conformation in the human brain.
Dr. Wons lab works to bridge the gap between genetic risk factors for psychiatric illnesses and neurobiological mechanisms by decoding the regulatory relationships of the non-coding genome. In particular, she and her colleagues implement Hi-C, a genome-wide chromosome conformation capture technique, to identify the folding principle of the genome in human brain. Dr. Won’s lab leverages this information to identify the functional impacts of the common variants associated with neuropsychiatric disorders.
