Research Scientist, Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute

Dr. Sallie Nowell is a licensed speech-language pathologist and research scientist at Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She received her Ph.D. in Speech and Hearing Sciences at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill under the mentorship of Linda Watson, EdD (funded by an OSEP Autism Leadership Grant). Prior to pursuing her doctorate, Nowell worked as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Speech-Language Pathology at Oregon Health and Science University’s Child Development and Rehabilitation Center in Portland. She has clinical and research experience with individuals from birth to early adulthood with a range of abilities.

Nowell’s research focuses on the assessment and treatment of social and pragmatic communication challenges in children with autism spectrum disorder and other neurodevelopmental conditions. Inspired by her LEND fellowship training, Nowell strives to incorporate interdisciplinary collaboration, community engagement, and student learning into all of her research projects.
